Neymar

Will Neymar’s Transfer Be Broken Anytime Soon?

Since the transfer system was put in place, records continue to be broken. Year after year. Neymar joins a lengthy list of players of record breakers. It stems back to 1893 when Willie Groves transferred to Aston Villa from WBA for £100.

We might have become accustomed to the astronomical prices for players in recent years but the money that was paid by PSG for Neymar from Barcelona was out this world. Neymar cost 138% more than what Man Utd spend on Paul Pogba from Juventus last summer.

It remains to be seen how long Neymar’s record breaking transfer will last. The longest transfer record reign lasted 17 years when a man called Bernabe Ferrerya who cost £23,000 signed for River Plate from Club Atlético Tigre some 85 years ago.

It’s hard to see the £198 million paid for Neymar being overtaken any time soon at the time of writing, Premier League clubs have spent more than £700 million on players this summer.

What could happen though, is a domino effect. Meaning that some deals may come close to the £198 million in the couple of weeks left in the transfer window. We’ve also seen defenders Kyle Walker and Benjamin Mendy becoming the most expensive defenders in history following their moves to Manchester City from London rivals Tottenham and French club Monaco.

Barcelona have been linked with Antoine Griezmann and Ousmane Dembele of Atletico Madrid and Germany’s Borussia Dortmund. Both players would cost in or around the £100m mark.

Barcelona have also been linked with Philippe Coutinho from Liverpool while his current club have considered a £70m bid for RB Leipzig’s Naby Keita who has played only one season in Germany’s top flight. With these players are on 5-year contracts and it won’t be surprising if they go for around £100m too.

Player power will win the race in the end and become victorious. That’s the landscape we live in now. It’s said that Neymar’s father convinced him to leave Barcelona. With his dad earning around £35m from the transfer.

The 18-year-old prodigy Kylian Mbappe of Monaco has been linked to some of Europe’s top clubs such as Real Madrid but Barcelona has also been noted with contacting him after he told his agent father that he wants to leave the French champions. Some big choices need to be made over the coming weeks for many of Europe’s top players.
